Paths

The CAI has defined a scale of difficulties on the basis of the following characteristics: the ground floor, the length of the path, the difference in altitude and elevation, the exposure, the possible difficulties of orientation.
T = TURISTIC
CHARACTERISTICS Routes on dirt roads, mule tracks or obvious paths that do not pose uncertainties or orientation problems, with modest slopes and limited differences in height.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES They require basic hiking knowledge and physical preparation for walking.

EQUIPMENT Appropriate clothing and suitable footwear are still required.

 E = HIKING

CHARACTERISTICS Routes that represent the majority of hiking itineraries, therefore among the most varied for natural  environments. They take place on mule tracks, paths and sometimes tracks; on terrain that varies in terms of geomorphological and vegetation context (e.g. pastures, undergrowth, debris, scree). They are generally marked and may have steep sections. You may encounter easy passages on rocks, not exposed, that require the use of your hands for balance. Any exposed points are generally protected. They may cross flat or slightly inclined areas on residual snow.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES They require a sense of direction and hiking experience and adequate training.

EQUIPMENT Suitable equipment is required with particular attention to footwear.

EE = HIKING EXPERTS
CHARACTERISTICS Routes that are almost always marked and require the ability to move along paths and tracks on impervious and/or treacherous terrain (steep and/or slippery slopes of grass, rocks or stony debris), often unstable and uneven. They may have exposed sections, traverses, ledges or rocky sections with slight technical difficulties and/or equipped, while the via ferratas themselves are excluded. They develop on medium-high slopes. It may be necessary to cross sections on snow, while all routes on glaciers are excluded.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES They require excellent hiking experience, orientation skills, knowledge of the characteristics of the mountain environment, sure-footedness and absence of vertigo, evaluation and decision-making skills as well as adequate physical preparation.

EQUIPMENT They require equipment and gear appropriate to the planned itinerary.
